15 Best Free Travel Apps for Your Next Trip

Best Free Travel Apps

From all my previous travels, I thought who needs apps? They’re a waste of space on my phone and I’m really stingy when it comes to my gadget’s storage space. Funny how I’m taking back these words now.

Just last December 2017 I got to travel all on my own with my head held high thinking all will be well. Thing is, nothing went well AT ALL. And that’s where I felt that having these apps are a necessity during my travels. They were a great backup help when all my plan HAD to change in an instant. Talk about storage eaters to one day a butt saver. That one point was when I told myself, travel apps have a ‘purpose’, and now I’m a fan of using them.

And so, I’m sharing some best free travel apps for your next trip!! They might help you one day if you’re not still using any of it yet. This is especially helpful when you’re country-hopping like I did once, or when you’re in a continuous travel abroad.

My last trip really thought me a lot about mindfulness of time lol. Circa app would have been a great help and save me a lot of confusion that time. *sigh*

WHY I LOVE IT:

5. ACCUWEATHER

Best Free Travel Apps

I usually don’t check this that’s why I always pick the wrong dates when traveling. Here’s another story from my first solo trip (in Vietnam). Since Vietnam is just a neighboring country of the Philippines, I didn’t check the weather at all thinking it’s just the same. I welcomed the chilly air with very thin clothes and had to endure it since I was already so far from the apartment I booked. Another silly story of mine is when I went to Corregidor the second time just to take some photos for my blog post. A few hours on the island, it heavily rained. And I have no umbrella at that time.

The lesson from the story? ALWAYS CHECK THE WEATHER. And a weather app is a MUST!

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • It’s one of the most accurate and reliable weather apps out there
  • Shows hourly details, daily weather forecast. Apart from that, it also alerts you of coming storms which is a very helpful feature especially when you’re visiting a country loved by typhoons. Ehem, the Philippines. Always know thy weather schedule.

6. GOOGLE TRANSLATE

Best Free Travel Apps

I think this is a given as one of the best free travel apps in the market. As the name implies, this is a very handy app you can use if you’re traveling somewhere and don’t speak the language. If communication looks bleak you can type and translate your sentence into their language. It’s a very handy app wherever you go~ I just wished I used this app in Vietnam, I had a really hard time out there.

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • Did you know that there’s an option of holding your camera to a text and Google will translate it instantly? Handy, yeah? This is especially useful in a country that uses a different form of writing like using characters – Japanese, Chinese etc.
  • This one is an essential app to use during your travels

8. LONELY PLANET GUIDES

Best Free Travel Apps

Itineraries are great but not every day is followed exactly, right? Lonely Planet Guides are a compilation of places you can tour or sight-see, eat, sleep, shop and more. The practical guide even listed out a brief description of the place, the times they are open, and how much the entrance fees are. Very useful if I say so myself and it’s one of the reasons why it’s on my list of my best free travel apps!!

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • The guides are downloadable so you can view them offline. They’re helpful whenever you have an unexpected plan during your travels or if some unforeseen event occurs
  • The interface looks so premium and as a graphic artist, I can stare at it for a long, long time!
  • An offline map can also be downloaded so you’ll be ready to go whenever and wherever!

9. TRIPADVISOR

Best Free Travel Apps

No one likes a trip to go wrong and Trip Advisor can help you dodge some unwanted circumstances by browsing reviews from other travelers. Even locally I prefer to read reviews first of the place I’ll be going to before I visit. I don’t want to spend on something that won’t be worthwhile so TripAdvisor is a huge help during a trip.

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • Millions of reviews available from other travelers worldwide that can help you decide where to go. You can find the best hotels or restaurants using this app categorized by rating, prices, and types. It’s definitely a go-to app before you decide on anything.
  • You can discover more cool things you can do in your destination of choice!
  • Much like Lonely Planet Guides, you can also download a city guide and use it offline! Now you can avoid spending on expensive roaming data while traveling.

If you’re really on a tight budget, you can never go wrong with Airbnb. As long as you pick the right area and room to stay for your trip, everything will be fine~ What made Airbnb app on this list? Read what I love about this app below.

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • All the hosts we’ve encountered are really nice and will immediately help you if you have any questions in the city. It has that ‘personal’ feel or connection with the locals.
  • If Google doesn’t have an answer for you in a certain country or you’re just too bored to search, asking your host might be a good idea since they know the place well

11. WAZE

Best Free Travel Apps

I don’t drive but when we were in Langkawi, we rented a car since that’s a much cheaper choice – hence why I downloaded Waze and then got fond of it. My friends and I used Waze to navigate around the island and boy was it super helpful. I’m sure this is familiar to most of you so I’ll lessen the introduction.

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • Waze shows you real-time road navigation –  it shows you the best routes to avoid traffic, road hazards and even accidents
  • It notifies you where to turn left or right; especially helpful if you’re not a good map reader
  • Shows you the cheapest gas station so you can save money.
  • Waze users can report these incidents and it will notify others where not to go
  • I love how Waze community helps each other so that anyone can be updated wherever and whenever during their travel or commute

12. GRAB AND UBER

Best Free Travel Apps

I’ve always used Grab ever, since I liked their interface better than Uber before. But, they still work the same and I already got points accumulated in Grab so I just continue using it. Why use Grab? As a Filipino, for me, this is safer because taking taxis here is somewhat of a gamble. I don’t want to take chances of having to overpay so I always use Grab. P.S. my friends and I just got luck last time in Makati area, it really lessens my trust.

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • I know all of us use either of this 2 but what I love about them when traveling is I know beforehand the amount to pay. Hence, lowering the chances of drivers trying to squeeze off my hard earned cash.
  • Sometimes taking a Grab ride is much safer and easier for solo travelers. Especially if the country you’re in doesn’t have much mass transit. I used this in Vietnam.
  • The points. Grab has some rewards that caught my attention. Like 20% discounts on a restaurant or a discount on your next ride. These are definitely rewards that I will purchase from them.

13. ROME2RIO

Best Free Travel Apps

Don’t get fooled by the fancy name, it’s not a holiday organizer somewhere in the Rio or Rome. Well, maybe it’s just me thinking the name is misleading. Rome2rio is a handy global planner that will help you to get to places from point A to point B! Type in any destination and it will show you all transit options you can ride from trains, buses or ferries. What’s much better? Rome2rio also shows you an estimate of the fares AND the travel time!

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • Route planning in a foreign country is complicated since we’re not familiar of the place and Rome2rio can lessen that load for you. It’s especially helpful for me who can’t handle a load of information suddenly plus it’s a time saver!
  • I love knowing how long my travel time is, I can estimate when I should get out of my room, get off and on the transits

14. SKYSCANNER

Best Free Travel Apps

Ah, one of my favorites! I always use this to check out airfares and it helped me tons. Instead of going into each airline’s website one by one to check fares, Skyscanner gives me a list of the cheapest available airfare. It is one handy app I won’t be deleting any time soon!

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • When I don’t know which country to go to next, I check out Skyscanner to give me what destinations are cheapest from my country. For me, this is one great way to save on my travel expenses. Like when I took a connecting flight from Kuala Lumpur to Ho Chi Minh and then Manila. I saved a little thousand rather than directly going back home from Kuala Lumpur to Manila.
  • Did you know that Skyscanner can show you all the cheapest airfare from ‘anywhere’ on the selected month you have chosen? I usually use this since sometimes special fares are available~

15. HOPPER

Best Free Travel Apps

Similar to Skyscanner but Hopper lets you know when to buy a ticket or if you should wait. Hopper also sends a notification when a price drops so you’ll always be updated on the prices of the country or country’s you selected. Did I also mention that Hopper can predict around what month the prices will rise or drop? Yes, it can~ You got all those information in the palm of your hands!

WHY I LOVE IT:

  • Right now, I am waiting for a flight to become cheaper and I already used Hopper to watch the price of that flight for me. They say Hopper has 95% chance price prediction accuracy so it’s time to test it out!
  • This is my alternative when I don’t get that Piso fare from Cebu Pacific. The airfare battle has been harsh recently, totally different from before where it’s easier to book a promo fare.
  • Lovely interface!!! I really LOVE it! CUTE!

Travel apps may not look it but they’re extremely helpful depending on your travels. As for me, I hate going online during my travels since I want to ‘live in the moment’. But one thing I did learn it’s better to have these handy apps ready just in case something goes wrong. Maybe something like your first time traveling alone and then getting yourself left behind by the tour you booked. This last line is a true story by the way hahaha.

Googling is your first go to platform whenever problems arise but during a trip, apps like Trip Advisor and Lonely Planet Guide can give you far more concentrated travel information. Since these apps are created for travel, I love how the destinations are arranged in detail giving me less time searching online. Plus, you can download their guides and use it offline, so it’s a huge help when your travel data is slow.
